Day One—Badlands

Badlands National Park, South Dakota

Day one took us from Minneapolis, along I90, to the Badlands in South Dakota. We spent some time at a local pub and camped with bison. Fish found a pretty sweet sweatshirt.

7.35a - stop @ lakehouse for atlas, rum. especially the latter.

77S because 35W (S) sucks right now

212650mi

9a Finally catch 90W, making tracks toward our destination

First stop: HYVEE Gas
McDonald’s
Sausage egg mcmuffin — how can they do something so right while doing so much else wrong

12p lunch @ Rest stop outside of Sioux falls — boring drive!

Page One of Notes

McDonald’s is gross—we all know this—but the breakfast is delightful. I can only assume it’s laced with children’s happiness, which is the only explanation.

SIGN: FIX
- DIABETES
- ASTHMA
- OBESITY
Which doesn’t seem to fit?

1.30p Stop @ LENEX in WHITE LAKE

DESOLATE!

SOUTH DAKOTA: GREAT FACES, GREAT PLACES
– maybe, MAYBE the former. none of the latter

“Abortion — the choice that KILLS”
expected more signs like that

3p Arrive in Badlands; cold and windy

“all about the waving”

3.45p Badlands Grocery, beer choices: diesel, budweiser, diesel

Page Two of Notes

For those paying attention, the one that doesn’t fit is obviously “asthma.” How can any medication treat weight issues and lung problems?

The vast majority of South Dakota is a wasteland. Then, out of nowhere, Badlands.

Also, when in parks, remember to wave.

4.30p HAY BUTTE LOOKOUT
possible panoramic; 1 diesel down

6.00p officially camped. On the way to Wall. a deer just crawled under a barbed fence w/ 1.5ft clearance. awesome

Badlands Bar –
– they (local ladies) need more foreign strange
– weather’s been colder than usual
(great, thanks)

Woke up about three to use the bathroom into 20° wind while afraid a bison was right behind me. new sleeping bag paid for itself

Page Three of Notes

It was a long day. The bison burger at the Badlands Bar was decent but the conversation was better.

Quite a few foreign women work at Wall Drug during the summer and some marry local men. Local women wouldn’t mind a few foreign men for similar reasons (the use of “foreign strange” is a direct quote).
